Labour Day Quotes

“Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work.”

– Aristotle

Labour Day is celebrated on 1st May in most of the countries of the world, which is linked to International Worker’s Day. But there are few countries where it is celebrated on other dates, often on days with the significance of labour movements in those countries. The background of this day is mainly to acknowledge the achievements of the workers. It has its origin in the LABOUR UNION MOVEMENT, for the implementation of an eight-hour system. The system highlights the working hours being eight, leisure to be of eight hours, and the mandatory eight hours of sleep.

In Australia, the holiday falls on different dates across states and territories. In the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, and South Australia, it is the first Monday in October. It is the second Monday in March, in Victoria and Tasmania. It is observed on the first Monday in March in Western Australia. Labour Day occurs on the first Monday in May, in Queensland and the Northern Territory (though the latter calls it May Day). In Christmas Island, it is on the fourth Monday of March.

On 21st April 1856, in Melbourne, the first protest for an eight-hour day occurred. The building workers on building sites and stonemasons around Melbourne stopped work and marched from the University of Melbourne to Parliament House to achieve an eight-hour day instead of the common 15 hours of work-day. The demonstration was a success, and also noted amongst the first organized workers in the world to gain an 8-hour day, with no loss of pay.

Similarly, in the Bahamas, it is observed on the first Friday in June. In Canada, on the first Monday in September since 1894. However, the origin can be traced back to various local demonstrations before 1894, gaining political significance since the labour movement in April 1872 in Toronto.

In Jamaica, before 1961, 24th May was celebrated as Empire Day, in honor of Queen Victoria and her liberation of the slaves. But in 1961, on the suggestions of Jamaican Chief Minister Norman Washington Manley, Empire day was replaced with Labour Day to commemorate Alexander Bustamante, who led a labour rebellion on 23rd May, 1938, leading to Jamaican independence.

In the United States, Labor Day is a federal holiday observed on the first Monday of September.

In this way, in various countries, it recognizes and acknowledges the contribution of workers in our society. It’s a tribute to all the hard works of the labour force all around the world.

To memorialize the efforts of the workmen, we have rounded up few quotes. We are sure that these quotes will prove to be worthwhile to show your sincere appreciation of your employees’ workmanship and to tell them that whatever they do for the company, it matters.
