Why do we celebrate April Fools Day?

The exact origin behind the celebration on April Fools Day is still unclear. The tradition behind this day is believed to be started in France. In 1564 Charles IX promulgated the new year to start from January 1 and not after Easter (a common practice in Christendom). Since the previous calendar was based on lunar day calculations and the dates kept shifting, the new calendar was adopted. The people who clung to old dates were called “April Fools.” There are some other theories as well, but the above one is the widely accepted reason.
